Pretzels

The word comes from "pretoila," Latin for "little reward."
That's what the snack was called because of the legend of a seventh-century monk who made them and gave them as little rewards to children for learning their prayers: he took a strip of bread dough that was left over, twisted it into the shape of arms folded in prayer, and baked it.

What a nice little reward!
